Battle Creek's Lady Grizzlies claimed the District 8-AA volleyball tournament championship Tuesday, Oct. 6, upsetting higher-seeded opponents on their home court in Spring Hill.

The fourth-seeded Grizzlies beat regular-season district champion Community 3-2 in five sets and defeated No. 2 seed Murfreesboro Central Magnet 3-1 in four sets to take the title, Main Street Media's Maurice Patton first reported.

Battle Creek entered the tournament with an 8-4 district record. The Grizzlies opened the bracket Monday, Oct. 5, with a 3-1 win over Cascade, according to MaxPreps.

The school's athletics account hyped the championship match on X before it tipped off:

@mcpsBCAthletics: "Staying in town this Fall Break? GET DOWN TO #THECREEK! Come out to Battle Creek today at 4:00 as volleyball fights for a District Championship! #ReadyforBattle"

The championship run pushed Battle Creek's overall record to 23-10. The streak hit six.

Head coach Jay Bennett's roster featured contributors at every class level. Senior Madigan Goudy led the team in kills per set at 3.0 and digs per set at 2.7, according to MaxPreps. Freshman Neely Merryman posted a team-best .357 hitting percentage, and junior Leila Johnson led the Grizzlies with six total blocks.

The tournament win over Central Magnet flipped a regular-season result. Central Magnet had beaten Battle Creek 3-1 in a district match on Thursday, Sept. 24. Battle Creek also swept Community 3-0 in a regular-season meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15, though the five-set championship match proved far tighter.

Battle Creek High School is a Spring Hill school in the Maury County district. As district champion, the Grizzlies advance to the TSSAA Class AA regional tournament. The opponent and date had not been announced as of Wednesday, Oct. 7.
