Montgomery Central's rushing attack overwhelmed Battle Creek in a 41-6 Region 5-4A loss Friday, Oct. 2, dropping the Grizzlies to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in district play.

Senior Malosi Laban scored four rushing touchdowns for the Indians, breaking free for runs of 60, 7, 40 and 12 yards. Junior Darius Howard added a 70-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter, and Carson Lancaster tacked on a 50-yarder as Montgomery Central piled up 27 unanswered points after halftime, as first reported by Main Street Media of Tennessee.

The game was within reach at the break. Montgomery Central led 14-6 after Laban's first two scores, and Battle Creek's Tripp Stennis punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 48 seconds left in the second quarter. The extra point failed.

That was as close as the Grizzlies would get.

Battle Creek coach Justin Burum pointed to turnovers and failed fourth-down conversions as the reasons his offense stalled. He said the defense broke down when players abandoned their assignments.

"When we're playing as a team, we'll get stops in good situations … When we try to step out of our job and do somebody else's, that's kind of where we make our mistakes," Burum said.

Montgomery Central head coach Wyatt Page said his staff made no major halftime adjustments. The Indians simply executed better in the second half, he said, calling it the first complete game his team had played all year.

Laban opened the third quarter with a 40-yard touchdown run. In the fourth, he scored from 12 yards out before Howard and Lancaster each broke long runs to push the final margin to 35 points. Mason Adams converted five extra-point kicks for the Indians.
