Summit's girls soccer team routed Brentwood Academy 7-0 on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Senior Summer Riley scored twice in the first half to lead the Spartans on the road in Brentwood.
Teammate Layla Zapolsky also found the net before halftime as Summit built a commanding lead. The Spartans scored seven unanswered goals and held Brentwood Academy scoreless for 80 minutes in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) match.
The shutout marked a sharp turnaround for a squad that had dropped two of its previous three matches. Summit fell 3-1 to Ravenwood on Sept. 15 and 2-1 to Page on Sept. 24.
After the Ravenwood loss, coach Deni Ismailovic told the Williamson Herald his team needed to clean up its play. "We need to connect passes better and stop giving up easy goals," Ismailovic said after that Sept. 15 defeat. He added that the Spartans were "not meeting up to the standard of what Summit soccer should be."
Two weeks later, the defense delivered a clean sheet.
Riley, a Florida commit, led the Columbia area with 18 goals and six assists at the midseason mark, according to the Columbia Daily Herald. She earned Summit's Farm Bureau Insurance Athlete of the Week honor on Sept. 22 after recording two goals and five assists across the Ravenwood and Brentwood High School matches the prior week. As we reported Sept. 29, Riley was also nominated for a TSSAA athlete of the week award.
The win moved Summit to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in district play, according to MaxPreps. The Spartans have scored 55 goals and allowed 18 this season. They sit at No. 9 in the state and No. 62 nationally.
Brentwood Academy, coached by Otey Smithson, carried a 3-8 record, according to MaxPreps.
Summit returns home to face Shelbyville Central on Thursday, Oct. 1, at 6 p.m.
