Summit quarterback Davis Smith is up for the Nashville Tennessean's Ponce Law Boys Athlete of the Week after leading the Spartans to a 20-19 win over Shelbyville Central.

Smith completed 17-of-32 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns in the Region 6-6A road victory Friday, Sept. 25, according to the Tennessean's weekly poll published by high school writer Jack Williams. He also threw one interception.

The nomination follows a finish that came down to the final seconds. Trailing by five with 35 seconds left, the Spartans drove 78 yards for the go-ahead score, Main Street Preps reported. Receiver Micah Sally hauled in a 21-yard touchdown pass from Smith with 3.6 seconds on the clock to complete the comeback.

The victory snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spring Hill school, which had entered the week at 1-4 overall and 0-1 in Region 6-6A. It was the Spartans' first region win of the season, according to the Columbia Daily Herald.

Smith had shown a big arm the week before as well. He threw for 153 yards and three touchdowns in a 42-21 loss to Lincoln County, as we reported Sept. 22. That game also included three interceptions, according to the Williamson Herald.

Against Shelbyville Central, Smith cut the turnovers in half and delivered when it mattered most. The 78-yard drive in the final 35 seconds gave Summit a 2-4 record and its first region win heading into the second half of the season.

Smith is one of 10 nominees in the Week 6 poll. The field includes Bo Bryan of Brentwood Academy, Brody Bullock of Independence and Cornersville's Jackson Smith, among others.

Voting is open at the Tennessean's online poll and closes Thursday, Oct. 1, at noon. Summit's Week 7 opponent and game date have not been announced.
