Spring Hill's total water storage capacity has reached 12 million gallons after a new 2-million-gallon tank went online south of the Stonegate Subdivision.
Spring Hill Water officials held a ribbon-cutting and "turning of the valve" ceremony for the Southside Water Tank, according to a city announcement. Construction began in August 2025 and wrapped up earlier in October 2026.
The tank is a capital project overseen by Spring Hill Water's SPARTAN division, short for Strategic Project Acceleration and Resilient Technical Adaptation. The city created the division in September 2025 to manage infrastructure buildouts. General Manager Dan Allen leads the utility.
The project hit a snag along the way. At the Board of Mayor and Aldermen's March 2 meeting, SPARTAN Assistant General Manager Will Brasfield told the board the project was roughly four months behind schedule. He requested permission for crews to work Sundays to catch up.
Mayor Matt Fitterer, Vice Mayor Linville and Aldermen Jimenez and Fuqua opposed Sunday work. The board directed Brasfield to notify the contractor that Sunday work was not permitted and that nearby residents should be notified so their property could be properly protected. Brasfield also explained that a smaller containment footprint would be used to ensure paint containment at the site.
Despite the delay, crews finished the tank within about 14 months of breaking ground.
When the city announced the SPARTAN division in September 2025, Allen said the team was built to handle projects like this one. "As projects ramp up, this dedicated and prepared team will be ready to meet the challenges that lie ahead," Allen said at the time. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved 10 new positions for Spring Hill Water in fiscal year 2026 to staff the division.
The 12-million-gallon total is spread across all of the city's water tanks and towers. Residents with questions about water infrastructure can contact Spring Hill Water through the city's website.
