Spring Hill and Summit cross country runners will race for spots at the TSSAA state championships this week in back-to-back sectional qualifying meets.

Spring Hill competes in the Section 3-AA meet Tuesday, Oct. 27, at Macon County. The Raiders will line up against Battle Creek, Giles County and Lawrence County in the four-team field, according to a schedule published by Main Street Media of Tennessee.

Two days later, Summit heads to The Hermitage for the Section 7-AAA meet Thursday, Oct. 29. The Spartans share that section with Independence.

Both meets are 5-kilometer races, per the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association's (TSSAA) cross country regulations.

What it takes to advance

The top four teams from each qualifying meet advance to the state championships. The next five fastest individual runners not on one of those qualifying teams also earn a trip to Memphis. That means a strong individual performance can punch a ticket even if a runner's team falls short as a whole.

No school may send more than seven runners to the state meet, according to TSSAA rules.

Different classes, different fields

Spring Hill is classified in Division I Class AA, which has six sections statewide. The Raiders' Section 3-AA field includes just four teams, so every squad in the race has a realistic shot at advancing.

Summit competes in Division I Class AAA, the largest classification. Class AAA has eight sections across Tennessee. At The Hermitage, though, the Spartans will see only Independence in their section.

State meet ahead

The state cross country championships are set for Thursday, Nov. 5, and Friday, Nov. 6, at Shelby Farms in Memphis. State meet races will also cover the 5K distance.

The postseason path is short. Runners who advance this week will have roughly one week before racing in Memphis.

Season results and individual runner performances for both programs were not available at the time of publication. Start times for the sectional meets have not been listed in available schedules.
