Spring Hill's girls soccer season ended Friday, Oct. 9, with a 1-0 loss to fourth-seeded Giles County in the District 8-AA Tournament quarterfinals at Pulaski Sportsplex.
Giles County's Maraiya Holt scored the match's only goal in the 63rd minute, slipping through the Lady Raiders' defense and placing a shot to the far post, as first reported by Main Street Media of Tennessee. Holt had threatened twice earlier, missing just left in the 25th minute and hitting the crossbar in the 46th.
The fifth-seeded Lady Raiders had their best chance in the 18th minute, when a free kick led to a near miss. Giles County outshot Spring Hill 14-5 overall.
The result mirrored a Sept. 15 regular-season meeting in which Giles County shut out Spring Hill 3-0. This time, the Lady Raiders held the Lady Bobcats scoreless through more than an hour of play before Holt broke through.
Giles County head coach Matthew Orgeron said his team adjusted at halftime. He said the Lady Bobcats challenged themselves to control the midfield and win 50-50 balls in the second half, and that shift changed the outcome.
Spring Hill head coach Robert Walker said his players executed the game plan despite the loss. He praised the team's growth over the season, noting that three players who had never played soccer before joined the roster this year. By season's end, one had earned a starting spot.
"If you paid seven bucks to get in here, you got your money's worth," Walker said.
The Lady Raiders picked up district wins along the way, beating Marshall County 8-0 on Tuesday, Sept. 29, and Lawrence County 7-1 on Tuesday, Aug. 25, according to MaxPreps. Spring Hill finished 3-10 overall and 2-5 in district play, placing fifth in District 8-AA.
Giles County (9-7-1) advanced to a Tuesday, Oct. 13, semifinal against top-seeded Murfreesboro Central at Richard Siegel Soccer Complex.
